Here's how you can get followers:

  • The Marshal starts with a crew of followers, automatically. Track them on your Crew insert.
  • The Blessed starts with followers if you take the Initiate background. Track them on the Initiates of Danu insert.
  • The Ranger starts with a follower if you take the Beast-bonded background or the Animal Companion move. Track them on the Animal Companion insert.
  • You might pick one or more dogs as a Special Possession, who act as followers. Track them on the back of the standard Inventory insert.
  • The Seeker might start with an unlocked minor arcanum that acts as a follower. If so, track it on the arcanum card itself.
  • Any PC can gain followers over the course of play.

Followers have the following stats:

  • Tags (like warrior, stubborn, or tall) that describe the follower; when you Order Followers, their tags affect what you roll.
  • Damage, hit points, and armor), which work the same for followers as they do for PCs.
  • An instinct, which describes how they tend to cause trouble for you.
  • GM moves, written as things that they can/will do (like "▸ Sniff out trouble on the wind"); not every follower has these.
  • A cost, which describes what keeps them following your lead

When you pay a follower's cost, they hold Loyalty towards you. You can then spend that Loyalty to have them overcome their fear, resist their instinct or tags, or do something they don't want to do (within reason). See Strengthen Your Bond for details.

A follower with the group tag represents multiple individuals who share stats and often act as one. Members of a group have the same tags, max HP, armor, damage, instinct, GM moves, and cost. They share a pool of Loyalty but each has their own current HP.

You can direct a group follower to act as a unit, or give orders to individual members. When an individual member stands out, you or the GM might assign a tag or two just for them. For example, if you're the Marshal, everyone in your crew might have the archer, observant, stealthy, and respected tags, but your lieutenant Eira might also be cynical.
