Describe the environment

Envision the site, or the individual area or room you're working on. Make some notes as to how you'll describe it.

For a larger site, think in generalities. What sorts of rooms, areas, terrain, and features can be found there? Build out a vocabulary of places, imagery, impressions, and details that you can pull from when framing scenes and describing the site.

For smaller, discrete places, get specific. What features of this place make it distinct? Keep it brief for now, just a sentence or two, enough to define the place in your head.

As you do this, think about the site's story. What traces remain of its original purpose? What condition is it in now? How are the current denizens using it, and how has that changed or shaped the place? Reflect the site's story in how you describe the environment.

If it helps you to draw maps or pictures at this point, go for it!
