Think offscreen, too
When the PCs head home at the end of an expedition, think about what's been happening back in the village. What have folks been up to? What's morale been like? What rumors and gossip have spread? What threats have escalated in the PCs' absence? What projects have moved forward?
When the PCs arrive home, show the players what's been happening. Describe the tension in the watch-sentry's voice as the PCs approach, the haggard look in people's eyes. Mention how the fields have all been planted and now they're being harrowed. Say how Macsen's health has worsened, or how the palisade is coming together.
Show players that the village changes while the PCs aren't around, and it will feel much more real, much more alive.
