Winter

In winter, the village consumes 1d4 + Population Surplus. If Stonetop has shrunk to a hamlet, it consumes only 1d2 + Population. If it has grown to a town, it consumes 2d6 + Population. If there's not enough, then Surplus drops to 0, the village Meets with Disaster, and the player picks a consequence.

Reflect such consequences in the fiction. Name specific folks who die or leave or grow infirm. Play out the scene where the granary's roof falls in. Make it clear how the smith's death will impact the village. (Note: the village is already Meeting with Disaster; these consequences don't trigger it again.)

If the player opts to have their PC die, leave, or retire, then let them have an epilogue in this session or the next. Ask the player to make a new PC between sessions.

After consuming Surplus (and handling any fallout), the Fortunes roll indicates how the rest of the season plays out.

On a 10+, have each player pick an NPC, then work as a group to figure out how and why their relationship with the PC has improved. Play these changes out as scenes or just describe them in brief (in addition to any other downtime activities and scenes you play out).

On a 9 or less, the village must consume more Surplus by winter's end or suffer the consequences above. The PCs will likely try to prevent this (see If you want to… for ways they can generate Surplus). On a 6-, they've also got to deal with threats to the village. Expect an eventful season.
